Prostate Specific Antigen

This test is used as a screening tool for prostate cancer. It isn't routinely done before the age of 40, unless there is a suggestive family history of prostate cancer. In fact, in men without symptoms of urinary obstruction or significant family history, there's very little evidence that PSA is a worthwhile screening tool at all.

That being said, we still offer it, along with a digital prostate exam, for men with evidence of prostate problems. If the PSA is high enough, even in the absence of symptoms, we will offer a referral to a urologist for further evaluation.
