Rapid influenza test

Influenza - or the "flu" - can start out like most other upper respiratory infections (runny/stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, etc). By the same token, most healthy people will eventually shrug it off without outside help. That being said, it makes a lot of people miserable, and there's no reliable way to predict the degree of suffering in advance. There are prescription medications which can help, but only if given within 2 days of the onset of symptoms.
We don't recommend flu testing for everyone with upper respiratory symptoms. However, if fever, weakness and head or body aches are also present, it may be worthwhile.
